Let’s be honest. By this time of year, most of us are pretty much “Toy-ed Out” We spend the better part of November and December figuring out what the BEST and most exciting toys will be for our little ones. Then the holidays come and go and even thinking about venturing out into the shopping world is exhausting.
However, the envitable Birthday invites come in the door and you think “It’s JUST after Christmas! What do you get the kid who as everything/just got everything?”
My Answer: Life of George
Life of George is a VERY simple concept but is VERY entertaining. First, you buy the Life of George Kit ($34.95, Ages 8+).
Then, you download 2 FREE Apps (works on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android Phones): “Life of George” & “Build ur Brain”
I started with the "Life of George" App:
Essentially, George is on a trip around the world and you are to complete the building challenges he gives you. The items you build are things he might see in each destination. Level 1 finds him in Hawaii!
The first challenge was to build a very yummy looking drink. You are given a set amount of time to build it & once you are done, you take a picture and you get a score based on your time and completion of the task.
As you can see, I got a score of ZERO because my replica was, and I quote "NOT so awesome".
As the levels go up, the challenges get harder and your time gets shorter:
You continue in the way until you have completed all the challenges for that destination. Then you move to the next area in the world!
Each challenge really makes you think and use your brain, plus you have a really neat finished product when you are done (I have yet to take my Hula Girl apart because I'm so proud of it!) A mom in our office here really likes that it appeals to an older audience (Ages 8+) and takes the technology they use on a daily basis and pulls them into the real world. Better yet, this is only ONE part of the App! There are also other ways you can play --> Multiplayer, Online & Build Your Own.
The "Build ur Brain" App is also really neat. Using the same idea, you are presented with a variety of challenges that REALLY require you to think such as Silhouette and Memory.
The benefits of this product are 3 fold. First kids get to play with LEGO (and who doesn't like to play with LEGO). Second, it encorporates Screen Time with something in the "Real World" and finally, really makes kids use their imagination and encourages them to think spatially. It's a GREAT winter boredom buster and really, it's just plain FUN!
